Answering the Call to Serve in Times of Crisis
At St. Simons UMC, we believe in the power of compassion and action. Our Early Response Team (ERT) is a dedicated group of volunteers trained to provide Christian care and practical assistance to those affected by disasters, both locally and regionally.
What We Do
Disasters like hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, and fires can strike suddenly, leaving communities devastated. Our ERT is ready to respond, offering:
- A Christian Presence: We offer a listening ear, spiritual support, and a shoulder to lean on during difficult times.
- Cleanup and Debris Removal: We assist with tasks like clearing debris, tarping roofs to prevent further damage, and removing damaged household items.
- Mucking and Gutting: When needed, we help remove water-damaged materials like drywall to prevent mold growth.
How We Work
- Trained and Ready: Our team members undergo an 8-hour UMCOR certification course and background check.
- Self-Sufficient: We are equipped with tools and supplies, including chainsaws, tarps, roofing materials, generators, and hand tools, to address immediate needs.
- Coordinated Response: We work closely with South Georgia UMCOR and local authorities to ensure efficient and effective assistance.
Time-Sensitive: We understand the urgency of disaster response. Our team is typically deployed for three days, providing immediate support while longer-term recovery efforts are organized.
